In 1490, a chapel was built around the rock where Our Lady of Tufo appeared. On the façade is a niche with a life size fresco of the Madonna. The architect was Anotoniazzo Romano, a student of Melozzo da Forlì. The Tufo church was immediately enriched by offerings and benificents. During the subsequent centuries, because of the growing devotion, the Sanctuary became enriched and they were able to renew and restore the cross , apse and the bell tower. In 1854, the architect Domenico Tanetti designed the beautiful and graceful facade. In 1867 while Albano was decimated by cholera, the inhabitants of Rocca di Papa were exempt from the infection and the citizens of Albano took refuge at the Sanctuary imploring for a miracle. In the face of all this faith and other many intercessions to the Madonna the Roman Authorities wanted to enrich the small Sanctuary with special privileges However the privilege that the Roccheggiani wanted most was the crowning of the Blessed Image that appeared in August 1872. In 1890 The Holy Trinity Fathers transferred to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tufo and in 1891 constructed the convent nearby . In 1894 the Holy Trinity Fathers took control of the church of Our Lady of Tufo. In addition a bell tower was built at the new convent. In 1927 the foundation stone of a new church was laid. The old chapel was destroyed in 1929, while they were building the new church around it. The new church was open to the faithful in 1931
